Bergen Itinerary · 2 Days

Two days in Bergen

Weekend visitors · First-time travellers

Two days is the right amount of time to see Bergen properly and fit in one fjord experience. Day one covers the city — Bryggen, Fløyen, dinner in a real restaurant. Day two gets you out on the water or up into the higher mountains, and still leaves time for the things you inevitably miss on day one.

Day 1

Day 1: The City

Bryggen, Fløyen & Bergen at its best

08:30
08:30

Breakfast

~80–160 NOK

Godt Brød bakery for coffee and pastries. Or, if you want a sit-down: Colonialen restaurant on Kong Oscars gate does a proper Norwegian breakfast from 8am.

09:15
09:15

Bryggen wharf

Free

Walk the alleyways while it's still quiet. Take your time — explore the inner courtyards, go up the wooden staircases, look into the workshops on the upper floors. At least an hour here.

10:30
10:30

Bryggens Museum

~100 NOK

The museum next to the wharf is built on the original medieval site and shows what Bergen looked like before the fires. It's excellent and undervisited — most cruise passengers don't bother. Give it 45 minutes.

11:30
11:30

Bergenhus Fortress

Free–160 NOK

Walk north and explore the grounds. If medieval architecture interests you, go into Håkon's Hall. If not, walk to the end of the promontory for the harbour view and turn back.

13:00
13:00

Lunch at Mathallen

~150–200 NOK

Fish soup, open sandwiches, or a proper fish cake (fiskekake) at the indoor food hall. Good coffee too.

14:00
14:00

Fløibanen + afternoon walk

~195 NOK

Funicular to Fløyen. Spend at least 90 minutes — take the trail north to Brushytten (45 min return) rather than staying at the viewpoint. The forest is what you're here for. Funicular back down around 16:30.

17:00
17:00

Free time

~80 NOK

Wander Øvregaten and the streets above the centre. Some of Bergen's best cafés are up here — Det Lille Kaffekompaniet is worth finding.

19:00
19:00

Dinner

~400–700 NOK

Colonialen on Kong Oscars gate is the best value good-quality restaurant in Bergen. Cornelius Fiskrestaurant (on a small island, book ahead) is the special occasion option. Enhjørningen in Bryggen if you want traditional and atmospheric.

Day 2

Day 2: Fjord or Mountain

Choose your adventure

09:00
09:00

Breakfast + decision point

~80 NOK

If the weather is clear: do the Ulriken cable car and the ridge walk to Fløyen (3 hours total). If the weather is overcast or rainy: take the Mostraumen fjord cruise instead — the fjord looks good in any weather and the boat is covered.

10:00
10:00

Option A: Ulriksbanen + ridge walk

~167 NOK cable car + ~195 NOK funicular

Shuttle bus to the Ulriksbanen cable car, up to 643m, then hike the ridge to Fløyen (2.5–3 hours). Funicular down. This is the best day hike available from Bergen city — exposed ridgeline with views in every direction.

10:00
10:00

Option B: Mostraumen cruise

~495 NOK

Walk to the wharf below Bryggen and board the 10am Mostraumen cruise. Returns 13:00. The narrows are spectacular regardless of weather. Buy tickets at the dock (check rodne.no to confirm times).

13:30
13:30

Lunch

~200–300 NOK

Depending on which option you chose: post-ridge walk, Fløistuen restaurant at Fløyen summit. Post-cruise, Bare Vestland restaurant near the harbour.

15:00
15:00

Anything you missed on Day 1

0–120 NOK

KODE art museums if culture is your thing. The old cemetery and wooden houses in Sandviken north of Bryggen. Or just walk along the harbour front and buy good cheese and chocolate at Mathallen to take home.

Budget guide

Budget

Mid-range

Local tips for this itinerary

  • 1.Book dinner at Colonialen or Cornelius the day before — both fill up in summer.
  • 2.The ridge hike from Ulriken to Fløyen is only possible in good visibility. Check the weather the evening before.
  • 3.The Mostraumen cruise runs regardless of weather. If the forecast is uncertain, book the cruise for day 2.
  • 4.Bergen's tap water is some of the best in Europe. Bring a reusable bottle.
