Bergen is defined by its seven mountains, and every Bergen resident has an opinion on when to do the complete traverse: the 35km circuit that takes in all seven peaks in a single day. It's a serious undertaking — 8 to 12 hours depending on fitness — but it's also one of the most rewarding urban hiking experiences in Europe. The mountains start almost at sea level and peak just above 600 metres, giving you repeated transitions between city, forest, and exposed ridge.

The seven peaks

The seven mountains of Bergen are Ulriken (643m), Fløyen (320m), Rundemannen (568m), Sandviksfjellet (397m), Lyderhorn (397m), Damsgårdsfjellet (290m), and Løvstakken (477m). The traditional route connects them all in a clockwise circuit from Ulriken, descending back into the city via Løvstakken. Several different route variations exist — the Bergen Tourist Association (Bergens Turlag) publishes maps and guides. The full route is typically marked with red trail markers.

The best half-day section

If you have three to four hours rather than a full day, the Fløyen–Rundemannen–Fløyen loop is the best single section. Take the Fløibanen funicular to the Fløyen summit, follow the trail markers north to Rundemannen (about 90 minutes), and return via a different path back to Fløyen. You get exposed ridge walking, views in multiple directions, and the full flavour of Bergen's mountain terrain without committing to the full circuit. The Ulriken–Fløyen ridge traverse (one-way, 2.5–3 hours) is the other obvious choice and gives more dramatic scenery.

The Syvfjellsturen tradition

The first Sunday in June sees thousands of Bergen residents complete the full circuit together — this is the Syvfjellsturen, Bergen's annual seven mountains walk. If your trip overlaps with this date (late May to early June), it's worth joining: the route is marked, there are checkpoints with food and drinks, and the collective energy of thousands of Bergeners in the mountains makes it an experience unlike standard hiking. Registration opens in spring on bergenturlag.no.
